70s classic rock oldies three dog night pop

Earl Robinson, Folk artist, wrote this song in 1954 along with songwriter David Arkin. It's lyrics deal with the overcoming of racism- inspired by the U.S. Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education ruling that segregation in public schools is illegal. The original song includes the line, "Their robes were black, their heads were white". Three Dog Night's pop-based version of the song- a 1972 single from their album Seven Separate Fools- became a hit, and it remains a staple of oldies radio stations. Read more on Last.fm.

The original lineup included three lead vocalists — Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells — along with Michael Allsup on guitar, Jimmy Greenspoon on keyboards Floyd Sneed on drums and Joe Schermie (from the Cory Wells Blues Band) on bass. Three Dog Night recorded some tracks with Beach Boys producer, composer, vocalist, and instrumentalist Brian Wilson before signing with Dunhill Records and at the time went under the name Redwood. The band changed their name based on an article describing how Australian Aborigines slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights, the coldest being a "three-dog night." Read more on Last.fm.
